In the United States, there is a lot of credit card debt.Shad been rising for eight years until the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns and subsequent relief efforts abruptly halted the upward trend.

A severe slowdown in consumer spending, a suspension of student loan payments, moratoriums on evictions and foreclosures, multiple stimulus checks, and advance payments of child tax credits have flooded residents’ pockets with unexpected but much-needed cash, which many Americans have used to pay down their credit card balances.

Credit utilization and late payments have both decreased as a result of the same forces.U.S. totalSCredit card debt fell from 930 billion in the fourth quarter of 2021 to 770 billion in the first quarter of 2021, and the percentage of cardholders who went into serious delinquency dropped even more, from 5 percent to 3 percent.32%-32%According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, over the same time period, the economy grew by 78%.

Researchers at Self analyzed data from the New York Fed Experian the United States to determine which states have the most credit card debt.SThe United States Census Bureau and the United StatesSStatistics from the Bureau of Labor StatisticsThe percentage of credit card debt that was severely delinquent (90 days or more) in the fourth quarter of 2021 was then used to rank states.

Overall, states with higher credit card delinquency rates were more likely than states with lower delinquency rates to report higher unemployment rates and lower average credit scores.
