The United States was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.STo avert a potential economic disaster, the government has pumped unprecedented amounts of money into American households.

From the expansion of social safety net programs like unemployment insurance and food stamps to multiple rounds of direct payments, Congress has passed a number of relief packages in the last year that have helped many families get back on their feet financially.

Early analysis of these policies suggests that one of the groups that will benefit the most from these relief efforts will be America’s poor people.According to a recent report from the Urban Institute, these investments will reduce America’s poverty rate to 7%.In 2021, the unemployment rate will be 7%, the lowest on record.

This decrease in the poverty rate would be an acceleration of a longer-term trend that has been underway for a few years.Following the Great Recession of 2007-2009, the poverty rate increased to nearly 16%.

After a steady but slow recovery over the previous decade, the poverty rate had fallen to 12 percent by 2021.3%However, while the overall trends are encouraging, this figure still represents about 40 million Americans, and poverty affects some groups more than others.
